Purim begins Monday evening, March 2 — and while many of us are tempted to treat Monday as a quiet night at home, Kehillah in Midlothian is taking the opposite approach.
This year, the community is offering not one, but two opportunities to celebrate — one for families and one for adults — each designed with warmth, accessibility, and a little bit of joy in mind.
The afternoon begins with After School Purim on the Porch (3:30–5:30 p.m.). Families are invited to stop by the Rabbi’s home for a relaxed, come-and-go gathering that makes it easy to mark the holiday, even on a busy weekday. Children can assemble their own mishloach manot gift baskets, paint Purim masks, enjoy festive snacks and hamantaschen, and pick up storytelling booklets, groggers, and other holiday treats to bring home. The event is free and open to all.
Then, once the workday winds down, the mood shifts.
Did you know that the Rabbi and Rebbetzin for Kehillah have a tiki bar in their home? Now you know!
Purim in the Tiki Room (6–9 p.m.) offers adults 21 and over a cheerful start to the week. Hosted at the before mentioned tiki room by the Rabbi and Rebbetzin, the evening features signature cocktails crafted by the Rabbi, assorted wine, elegant nonalcoholic cocktails, a massive grazing table, hamantaschen, vintage Israeli music spinning on the turntable, and hands-on activities like mask painting and assembling mishloach manot.
Costumes are welcome — and extras will be available. Admission is $10, with complimentary tickets for volunteers.
As this is a home-based event, the address will be shared with registrants a few days in advance.
