Fulfilling the Four Mitzvot of Purim
On March 1, the Religious School celebrated Purim in most of the typical ways.
Students re-enacted the Purim story with many humorous moments, and listened to the Megillah, while shouting down the name of Haman. They tasted holiday treats and made Mishloach Manot bags.
Students, young and old, played games, and competed for prizes during the carnival.
The first three Mitzvot of Purim, Hearing the Megillah, Eating festive foods, and making Mishloach Manot Bags for family and friends, were easy to accomplish. But fulfilling the mitzvah of Matanot L’evyanim – gifts to the poor – in a meaningful fashion, took a little fancy footwork. Students learned that organizations that assist unhoused people are often in need of clean warm socks and donated over 100 pairs of socks for adults and children that will be distributed to various organizations around Richmond.

Students get ready for Passover!

Two special guests visited our school in March. Anne Blankman, author of The Blackbird Girls, gave an author's talk to our 6th and 7th grade class, who had read her novel. Danny Kraft, local scholar, gave a fascinating workshop on the history, culture and impact of Yiddish poets and authors on Israeli and American literature to the Better Together cohort of teens and senior citizens.
