RTA Expands Learning Beyond the Classroom

Through Robust Extracurricular Programs

At RTA Richmond Hebrew Day School, learning does not end when the dismissal bell rings.

From competitive middle school athletics to hands-on enrichment clubs in the arts, sciences, and Jewish studies, RTA’s extracurricular program reflects the school’s commitment to educating the whole child.

In recent years, RTA has expanded its afterschool offerings to ensure that students of all ages have meaningful opportunities to grow socially, creatively, and physically. Middle school students proudly represent RTA on the court through girls’ volleyball and boys’ basketball, where teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship are emphasized alongside skill development. Participation in league play gives students the chance to compete, collaborate, and build confidence in a positive environment.

Younger Students

For younger students, athletics begin early with soccer, mixed sports, and movement-based programs that focus on coordination, cooperation, and joy in physical activity. These experiences lay the groundwork for healthy habits while reinforcing values of respect and perseverance.

RTA’s extracurricular program is equally strong in the arts. Students can explore visual expression through art and mosaic ceramics, where they design and create original works from start to finish. Theatre club invites students to build confidence, collaborate with peers, and bring stories to life on stage. Dance and yoga programs offer additional outlets for self expression, balance, and mindfulness.

STEM enrichment is another cornerstone of RTA’s afterschool programming. Mad Science and STEAM clubs engage students in hands-on experiments that spark curiosity and problem solving. From chemistry reactions to engineering challenges, students learn that exploration and creativity are central to scientific thinking.

Judaic Studies

Jewish learning continues beyond the school day through Judaic Studies clubs that reinforce skills in meaningful and engaging ways. These offerings allow students to strengthen their connection to Jewish learning in a relaxed setting that complements the academic day.

Social development is also thoughtfully supported. Programs such as Friendship Club and IMPACT provide students with structured opportunities to build relationships, develop leadership skills, and engage in community-oriented projects. These clubs foster empathy, collaboration, and a sense of responsibility toward others.

What unites RTA’s extracurricular offerings is intentionality. Each program is designed not only to enrich students’ interests, but to align with the school’s educational philosophy of nurturing confident, capable, and values driven learners. Small group settings and familiar faculty leadership help ensure that students feel supported as they try new activities and stretch themselves in new ways.

As RTA continues to grow, its extracurricular program remains a vibrant extension of the school day. Whether students are shooting baskets, shaping clay, experimenting in a lab, or performing on stage, they are building skills that last far beyond the afternoon hours.

For RTA families, these programs offer more than after-school care. They offer community, opportunity, and a space where students can discover new passions while strengthening their sense of belonging.
