When Skyler Legano (obm) was a student at Rudlin Torah Academy, he was known for something far greater than his years: a deep joy for giving.
Skyler had osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer, and he passed away at just 12 years old while in the 8th grade at RTA. Even during his hardest moments, he carried a remarkable appreciation for the value of a gift. He loved giving gifts and found just as much excitement watching his sister open something special as he did unwrapping a gift of his own.
After his passing, the Rudlin Torah Academy community wanted to honor Legano’s memory in a way that reflected the heart he had shown throughout his life. In December 2020, they created the Skyler Legano Toy Drive.
Each year, RTA students gather new toys to brighten the days of children in the community. The initiative gives students the chance to emulate Legano’s kindness and learn firsthand the impact that compassion can have on others. JFS has been a partner in the toy drive since its very beginning.

The gifts collected each year make their way to children and families receiving support from JFS and others such as the American Cancer Society, Noah’s Children and Chai Lifeline. These partnerships ensure that the toys reach a wide network of families, spreading comfort, encouragement and joy far beyond the school’s walls and reflecting the reach of Legano’s legacy.
Inspired by Legano’s spirit of generosity, the community also created Skylar’s Scholars, a fund supporting middle school students.
What began as a way to bring comfort to a grieving family has grown into a mission of hope and kindness that touches lives across the region. Through every toy donated, every smile shared, and every lesson learned, Legano’s memory continues to shine.
