With Joy, Connection, and Community Spirit
By Sheri Rodman, Executive Director, Hillel at VCU
Hillel at VCU has launched the new academic year with incredible energy, bringing students, families, and alumni together in a joyful celebration of Jewish community and tradition.
The semester began with a warm and spirited Meet and Greet during move-in weekend, welcoming new and returning students—and their families—from across Richmond, Northern Virginia, and Virginia Beach. The excitement was high as everyone connected over shared stories, hopes for the year, and lots of smiles.
Before classes began, the Hillel student board (below) gathered for a leadership retreat focused on building community through engagement. Centered around the Jewish value of hachnasat orchim—welcoming guests—the retreat empowered student leaders to be intentional about helping new faces feel at home within the Hillel family.

Afterward, students had a blast putting their teamwork to the test during a fun and challenging escape room adventure.
On the first day of classes, students took a breath of fresh air with a hike and picnic on Belle Isle, enjoying time to unwind, connect, and embrace the beauty of Richmond's natural spaces. It was a perfect blend of new friendships and joyful reunions.

The first two Bagel Breaks of the year were also a hit! (Below) Hillel popped up on the MCV campus to schmooze with dental and medical students, and the following week Hillel hosted the laid-back gathering at the Hillel House that brought together students across disciplines and backgrounds. Looking ahead, the community is gearing up for its Second Annual Alumni Shabbat Dinner on Friday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. Open to students, alumni, faculty, and staff, this special evening promises to be a celebration of connection across generations—an opportunity to reconnect, make new memories, and celebrate the vibrant legacy of Hillel at VCU. September will also bring exciting collaborations, including a trip to the Hadassah and Weinstein JCC event featuring the Challah Prince, and a post–Rosh Hashanah meetup with UVA Hillel students at Carter Mountain.
For the High Holidays, Hillel will offer a range of opportunities to engage spiritually and communally. Students will have the option to attend Rosh Hashanah services at Congregation Beth Ahabah and join a festive second-night dinner followed by a relaxing vision-boarding craft night to set intentions for the year ahead.
For Yom Kippur, Hillel will provide students with tickets to traditional services at nearby synagogues for those looking to observe in a classic, congregational setting.
For students seeking a more reflective and personal experience, Hillel will also offer an alternative “Pause and Reflect” service—an intimate gathering guiding students through meditation, journaling, and setting meaningful resolutions for the year. At the end of the fast, the community will come together for a warm and well-earned Break Fast featuring all the traditional favorites.
As Hillel at VCU kicks off this new chapter, the enthusiasm and dedication to Jewish life on campus are shining brighter than ever. From meaningful traditions to new initiatives, it's clear that the semester ahead will be filled with community, celebration, and countless moments of connection.
From our Hillel family to yours, wishing you a sweet, successful, and meaningful year ahead!
