Hillel at VCU Celebrates

By Sheri Rodman, Executive Director

We closed out the fall semester with a snowy “Shabbanukkah” celebration, as students braved the storm to gather for a Hanukkah-style Shabbat dinner filled with warmth, light, and community.

The holiday spirit was truly in the air as students wrapped presents in support of the JFS and JCC Lights of Love initiative, spreading joy well beyond campus. See photos above/below.

New Learning Opportunities

This semester, in addition to our regular programming, we’re excited to introduce two new Hillel learning opportunities: Shabbat Hosting Lab and the Bridging Service Fellowship.

Shabbat Hosting Lab invites students to dive deeply into the history and practice of Shabbat while developing the skills to become thoughtful, welcoming hosts. Through shared learning and hands-on experience, students will grow together as a close-knit cohort and strengthen their connection to Jewish tradition and community.

The Bridging Service Fellowship brings Jewish and non-Jewish students together to lead with empathy, confidence, and curiosity in an increasingly complex world. Through a blend of volunteer service, learning, and intentional bridge-building, participants will deepen relationships, strengthen dialogue and service skills, and create meaningful shared impact on campus and in the broader community.

Birthright Israel Plans

We’re also hopeful to take a small group of students on Birthright Israel in May.

This transformative journey will allow students to explore Israel’s culture, history, and vibrant Jewish life while building community with fellow Rams. It’s an opportunity to deepen Jewish identity, form lifelong friendships, and experience Israel in a powerful and unforgettable way.

Basketball Watch Party

And finally, we invite the community to join us—along with fellow VCU alumni—for a basketball watch party on Saturday, January 24 at 5. at PBR in Carytown.

It will be a fun evening of connection with new and old friends, and a chance to hear directly from current students about Jewish life on campus.

As we look ahead to the months to come, the energy and enthusiasm of our students continue to inspire us. From learning and leadership to service and celebration, Jewish life at VCU is growing in meaningful ways, and we’re excited to see what this next chapter brings.
