FCVA: 3rd Annual RVA Adaptive Athletics Day Set for Aug. 30

Friendship Circle of Virginia, Jacob's Chance, and Sportable are partnering to host their 3rd Annual RVA Adaptive Athletics Day (RAAD), formerly known as All Abilities Sports Day, on Sunday, August 30, from 2 - to 4 p.m. at the Henrico Sports and Events Center.

The free event is designed for individuals of all abilities, ages 5 to 40, and provides a unique opportunity to experience adaptive sports while building confidence, friendships, and community connections. Every attendee is paired one-to-one with a dedicated teen or adult volunteer who offers encouragement and support throughout the afternoon.

Participants can explore a variety of adaptive sports, including basketball, soccer, seated volleyball, and martial arts, while also enjoying crafts, a sensory-friendly area, and complimentary refreshments provided by Wegmans.

RVA Adaptive Athletics Day continues to create a space where everyone has the opportunity to participate, try something new, and discoversports can be accessible to all.

Below are just a few of the adaptive sports and other activities from past events.

“It gives them another opportunity to socialize,” shared a parent of a child with disabilities. “That’s something that kids are not doing now. They’re not socializing. So this is an outreach effort to help kids bond, make new relationships, and another way to grow.”

“RAAD gives participants a chance to try something they may not have thought was possible. They discover that there is a place for them and may even find a new sport they love,” shared a Friendship Circle of Virginia staff member.

Outside the gym, participants and families can visit a sensory-friendly area offering quieter activities and a place to take a break before returning to the action.

“It lets them know they’re not being isolated. It shows them there are things out there for them, whether they have a disability or not. Opportunities like this help children grow. As parents, it’s up to us to give them those opportunities,” shared a parent of a child with disabilities.

Friendship Circle of Virginia and Jacob's Chance create inclusive experiences that foster friendships and social opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Sportable provides sport, recreation, health, and wellness opportunities to individuals with physical disabilities, visual impairments, and those requiring physical accommodations.

Together, the organizations are creating an afternoon where every participant can discover new abilities, make lasting friendships, and experience the joy of belonging.
