A Season of Community/Celebration: Happenings at the JCC in November

As the vibrant colors of fall settle across Richmond, the Weinstein Jewish Community Center is bustling with activities and events designed to bring together families, friends, and neighbors. November at the JCC promises a rich tapestry of experiences—from festive outdoor fun to deep cultural exploration and lively performances. Whether you’re looking to connect through learning, enjoy creative expression, or share family-friendly celebrations, there’s something here for everyone.

Dive into Jewish Life & Community Engagement

November is also a time for deepening connection and knowledge within the Jewish community. On Sunday, Nov. 9, from 4 - 6 p.m., the Weinstein JCC will host the 7th Annual Global Day of Jewish Learning. This international event unites Jewish communities worldwide for a single day of study and unity. This year’s theme, “70 Faces of Torah,” explores the idea that the Torah contains multiple layers of meaning, from the literal to the mystical. Community Rabbis will lead discussions alongside Sara Lippman, co-editor of Smashing the Tablets: Radical Retellings of the Hebrew Bible, offering fresh perspectives on this ancient text.

Pinina Morgan, Jewish Life and Engagement Manager, said, “Global Day of Jewish Learning is a beautiful reminder that learning can bring us together across backgrounds and beliefs. It’s a day of discovery, connection, and shared curiosity that enriches our community and deepens our understanding of tradition.”

This free event invites all to join in shared learning and dialogue.

For families looking for a fun evening out, the JCC’s Kids’ Night Out on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 6 to 10 p.m. is the perfect chance for parents to take a break while their K-5th graders enjoy a night packed with swimming, gym games, a delicious spaghetti dinner, and an ice cream sundae party, ending with a movie night—all supervised by trained Kids’ Place staff.

Music lovers won’t want to miss the Voices in Peace Jewish Community Choir’s performance on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. Founded in 2023, this inclusive choir brings together singers from diverse backgrounds and faiths with the goal of fostering connection and peace through music. Under the direction of Natan Berenshteyn and Jamie Barrack, Voices in Peace has shared inspiring songs with audiences throughout the Richmond community, creating bridges across differences through harmony and song.

Literary and Culinary Delights at the Fife-Davis Family Annual Jewish Book Fair

November is National Jewish Book Month, and the Weinstein JCC is celebrating with a lineup of author talks and book presentations every Monday, hosted by the 5400 Club. This year’s event features an exciting mix of in-person and virtual sessions highlighting diverse Jewish voices and stories.

Leslie McGuigan, Senior Director of Programs, shared, “Our Annual Jewish Book Fair is a vibrant celebration of storytelling and culture. From memoirs to cookbooks and everything in between, these authors bring Jewish life and history to our community in compelling ways.”

Two standout events include the Nov. 8 presentation, Carole King: She Made the Earth Move!, where author Jane Eisner explores the remarkable life and legacy of the legendary singer-songwriter. The evening also features a live musical performance by Susan Greenbaum and a book signing afterward.

Then on Nov. 16, the JCC welcomes Executive Chef Beejhy Barhany for a special cooking demonstration and discussion tied to her new cookbook, Gursha: Timeless Recipes for Modern Kitchens, From Ethiopia, Israel, Harlem, and Beyond. Chef Beejhy, owner of Harlem’s Tsion Café, shares her family’s story and the rich traditions of the Beta Israel community, including the Sigd holiday, as guests enjoy delicious samples prepared by Richmond’s JewFro restaurant. This event combines culinary exploration with cultural storytelling, making it a true highlight of the book fair.
