When the Shalas first joined Friendship Circle, they were seeking activities where their daughter Rona, who has a disability, could feel included.

“What we found was something much deeper. We found a community that feels like home,” the family shared. For Rona, the world can sometimes feel like a series of barriers, but at Friendship Circle’s monthly Birthday Circles and seasonal events, those barriers disappear. “She has been given the chance to participate in activities that might otherwise be out of reach, and in doing so, she has found her confidence, her smile, and a group of friends who truly see her for who she is,” the Shalas said.
The family’s involvement extends beyond Rona. Their other daughter, Anisa, is a dedicated teen volunteer and member of Friendship Circle’s Teen Leadership Board.

“Watching her grow in compassion and leadership has been one of our proudest moments as parents,” the Shalas said. “She isn’t just ‘helping’; she is building lifelong friendships and learning the power of an inclusive heart. Friendship Circle has given her a platform to share her love for others and a space where she feels empowered to lead.”
Friendship Circle has also provided the Shala parents with an invaluable network of support. “Raising a child with a disability can sometimes feel isolating, but here, that isolation vanishes. We have been blessed to connect with the amazing members of the organization and other parents who understand the journey,” they shared. These connections offer not only guidance and resources but a community that celebrates victories and stands together through challenges.
Through their active participation, the Shalas have become more than members; they are integral to the Friendship Circle family. “We are more than just members of Friendship Circle. We are part of a movement of kindness and belonging,” the family said. “It truly means the world to us to be part of such an amazing, inclusive community where every child is celebrated, every teen is valued, and every parent is supported. We are so incredibly grateful for the love and light this organization brings into our lives every single day.”
