The spring semester is off to an energizing and meaningful start at Hillel at VCU.
Even before classes resumed, a group of our students had the opportunity to speak with members of the Richmond Jewish Women’s Club about what it’s like to be Jewish on campus today. While understandably a bit nervous, the students spoke with honesty, thoughtfulness, and confidence.

Many attendees shared how meaningful it was to hear directly from today’s students and to reflect on the lasting impact Hillel had in their own lives.
We began the semester with a lively Shabbat dinner that brought together a full room of students. After dinner, students stayed late playing games and building connections—exactly the kind of joyful, welcoming community we strive to create. (And if anyone has gently used board games they’d like to donate, we’d happily give them a second home!)

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, our students partnered with VCU’s graduate mentoring program for a day of service at a local church, helping prepare and serve meals to Richmonders experiencing homelessness.

Students described the experience as deeply meaningful and aligned with Jewish values of dignity, service, and care for others.
As we look ahead to February, we’re excited about several upcoming opportunities for students and community members to engage with Hillel:
-
Understanding Antisemitism Training (with VCU School of Social Work): A thoughtful, interactive training focused on recognizing and addressing antisemitism in today’s campus climate.
-
Basketball Watch Party: Come cheer on the Rams, hang out with students and alumni, and enjoy a fun, relaxed evening together with Hillel. Rescheduled for Wednesday, February 11 at 6:30 p.m., at Pizza and Beer of Richmond.
-
Visit www.hillelatvcu.org/calendar to learn more and RSVP.
-
Dignity Grows Packing Party: An interfaith service project with the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond packing essential hygiene supplies to support dignity and care in our local community.
-
Repro Shabbat Dinner: A meaningful Shabbat dinner and conversation exploring Jewish perspectives on reproductive rights, community, and care.
Thank you for your continued support of Hillel at VCU. We’re grateful to be part of such an engaged Jewish community and look forward to all that’s ahead this semester.
