Grand Event to Feature an Inspiring Evening with Bruce Pearl on Oct. 22

“In the big picture, if I lose a game, so what! But if we, the Jewish people, lose this fight or we lose the battle there is a lot more at stake." - Bruce Pearl

Federation President Brian Greene said, “I hope everyone can join us at this year’s Grand Event on October 22 at the Short Pump Hilton! We’re excited to welcome Bruce Pearl to Richmond. Many may remember Bruce as the basketball coach of Auburn and, before that, Tennessee, or seen him last season on TV analyzing games.”

He added, “You may also only remember him because, in 2019, UVA made two free throws with 0.6 seconds left to beat his Auburn team and advance to the NCAA Championship game. He’s one of the most successful and recognizable coaches in college basketball.”

Brian noted, “But that's not why we invited him.”

He said, “On October 22, we’re all on the same team. We invited Bruce because he has become a powerful voice for Jewish pride, leadership, and standing up for what you believe in. His story, his values, and his advocacy resonate far beyond sports. Whether someone is a basketball fan, passionate about Jewish life, interested in leadership, or simply looking for inspiration, there will be something meaningful for them to take away from the evening.”

Federation CEO Daniel Staffenberg said, “There is already tremendous excitement building. At its heart, the Grand Event is about coming together to celebrate our collective strength and set the stage for the year ahead through philanthropy, connection and belonging.”

Beyond basketball, Pearl has used his platform to speak about Jewish history, Israel, and the importance of confronting hatred and antisemitism. Following the October 7 attacks, he became a prominent public supporter of Israel and spoke openly about the pain, fear, and uncertainty experienced by many in the Jewish community.

The Federation’s signature event is set for the Hilton Richmond Hotel in Short Pump, 12042 West Broad St. The chairs are Ellen Renee and Louis Adams, Melanie and Eric Grossman and Lynn and Jay Schwartz.

The evening begins at 7 p.m. with a dessert reception followed by the program.

This promises to be an unforgettable evening of inspiration, community and connection.

$54 per person / $75 after Oct. 6.
