Elementary School students enjoy Reader’s Café with RJCL mentors

Fourth-grade students at R.C. Longan Elementary School in Henrico County were thrilled this year to take part in Reader’s Café weekly sessions with volunteer mentors from the Federation’s Richmond Jewish Coalition for Literacy.

Team Leader Claudia Biegler noted, “The children were so excited to be with us during the year. There was much laughter and giggles with these terrific 4th graders.”

The mentors taking part in the lunch sessions included Claudia, Susan Farris, Diane Hurwitz, Steve Linas and Barbara Simon. Miriam Davidow is the overall RJCL coordinator for various programs at the school. The students were divided into small reading groups with each of the mentors for two six-week sessions in the Fall and the Spring.

Claudia added, “Many loving friendships were developed over the year. They were really excited, very enthusiastic readers throughout the year. It was a joyful experience for our mentors to be with the children each week.”

She also saluted the support from Principal Dr. Nicole Henderson and Librarian Blair Hart. “We have a long, wonderful, and welcoming relationship with the school, and so much enthusiastic support for Reader’s Café and other programs we enjoy doing at the school.”

Claudia said the mentors also gave the students books to take home to read and keep with them after the sessions, and the students were thankful and enjoyed these books.

As you can see in the photo above, the students are happy holding some of their reading books, joined by RJCL mentors.

The following letter was received from the school for the Federation’s support during Teacher Appreciation Week.
