The Jewish Community Federation of Richmond’s 30th Grand Event will feature an inspiring evening with Bruce Pearl, a strong public supporter of Israel and a nationally recognized college basketball coach and broadcaster who co-founded the Jewish Coaches Association, creating a platform for Jewish coaches at all levels to connect and support one another.

The Federation’s signature event is set for Oct. 22, at the Hilton Richmond Hotel in Short Pump, 12042 West Broad St. The chairs are Ellen Renee and Louis Adams, Melanie and Eric Grossman and Lynn and Jay Schwartz. 

Federation CEO Daniel Staffenberg said, “There is already tremendous excitement building. At its heart, the Grand Event is about coming together to celebrate our collective strength and set the stage for the year ahead through philanthropy, connection and belonging.”  

Pearl led Auburn to two NCAA Tournament Final Fours, earned National Coach of the Year recognition in 2025, and coached the Maccabi USA Men’s basketball team to the 2009 Gold Medal at the Maccabiah Games in Israel. Known for his energy, candor and willingness to speak publicly about his beliefs, he has used his platform to speak about Jewish history, Israel and the importance of standing up against hatred.

Beyond basketball, Pearl has used his platform to speak about Jewish history, Israel, and the importance of confronting hatred and antisemitism. Following the October 7 attacks, he became a prominent public supporter of Israel and spoke openly about the pain, fear, and uncertainty experienced by many in the Jewish community. He has connected those concerns to a broader commitment to remembrance, including visits to Yad Vashem with one of his Auburn teams and reflections on the meaning of the phrase "Never Again." In 2022, The Algemeiner named Pearl to its J100 list, recognizing individuals who have made a positive impact on Jewish life.

In 2025, Pearl joined Turner Sports and CBS Sports as a college basketball game and studio analyst.

The evening begins at 7 p.m. with a dessert reception followed by the program.
