The Jewish Community Federation of Richmond is nearing completion of another banner fundraising year, reporting over $3.2 million in 2022-2023 fiscal-year fundraising.

“Thanks to our donors, volunteers and professionals, this amazing achievement will help people in a time of growing need and opportunity, both here at home and overseas. The growth in number of gifts, actively engaged members of our community and dollars is the result of outstanding efforts by our Fundraising leadership, Richard Thalhimer and Jill Goldfine,” Amy Nisenson, JCFR President shared.

The $3.2 million total included $2.965 million pledged to the Federation’s Annual Community Campaign, and over $200,000 in supplemental and corporate gifts.

On average donors increased their gifts by over 12% this year and the Campaign welcomed 247 new or recovered donors.

In recent years, the Jewish Federation has dramatically increased total fundraising and impact in the community with expansions in government and foundation support, corporate sponsorship and private supplemental giving.

Federation leaders attribute much of the fundraising success to the Federation’s strong annual Campaign, a core support base that enables our community to respond and secure the other revenue streams.

Richard Thalhimer, Financial Resource Development Chair, commented, “As the Jewish Federation’s COVID response showed, our Community Campaign ensures that we can meet the needs of vulnerable populations whenever our Jewish Community faces a crisis.”

Including distributions over the past year, the Federation-supported causes included securing our community from the rising threat of Antisemitism, aging and human needs, community programs and Jewish agencies that serve both Jews and non-Jews, Israel travel and local Israel-related programming, Jewish community life and Jewish learning, and national and overseas Jewish agencies that support Jewish life around the world.

Additionally, over the past two years over $500,000 has been distributed to support Jews in Ukraine with another $300,000 being used to support 23 families from Ukraine who are living in Richmond.

“This year’s fundraising total represents a monumental achievement at a critical moment for Jewish life,” said Daniel Staffenberg, CEO of the Jewish Federation.

“I am so grateful that the outpouring of community support will help our city in a time of need and help to face future crises. We are lucky to be part of such a generous and caring Jewish community.”
