Transformation occurs when we walk life’s journey with our eyes wide open, our hearts focused on doing what is best for all, and responsibly embracing and managing the twists and turns of the path.

We want you to know about a transformative moment in Beth Sholom’s 75-year history of serving seniors and the greater Richmond community.

The Beth Sholom Board of Directors has approved the sale of the campus facilities to Hill Valley Healthcare, LLC. The sale will take effect July 1, 2023. The Board has every confidence that Hill Valley Healthcare will continue to provide the highest level of care for our residents and carry forward the commitment of excellence our organization has brought to the community since we first opened our doors.

We expect this news will bring questions and for some, concern, but be assured that the decision to move forward with this change was done following an extensive review of our organization, the challenging economic environment, and the opportunity to place the organization in very good hands.

Why Hill Valley Healthcare

The Board conducted an extremely thorough and thoughtful review of all potential purchasers and in the end Hill Valley Healthcare stood out as an organization which truly respected and aligned with our organization’s values and shared a commitment to seniors. This was not a “highest bidder” process but rather a best overall fit which meant an organization which will maintain a wonderful living experience for residents, and an exceptional working environment for our team while bringing new levels of expertise to the community.

We are also pleased to share that the founders of Hill Valley Healthcare have been raised in the Jewish faith and fully appreciate the role of elders in our lives.

Why Now?

Beth Sholom has been extremely fortunate to have an outstanding leadership team in place to guide the organization through the most turbulent times any of us could imagine. Throughout COVID and now during a time of an extremely tight labor market and historic inflation, the Beth Sholom team has remained focused on the well-being of our organization and all of you. Each challenge has been met with a people-focused solution, every setback has been met with resiliency and every opportunity to serve our community has been embraced.

Our industry has been faced with economic hardship caused by staffing shortages, rising staffing costs, and inadequate Medicaid and third-party reimbursement in an inflationary environment. Our area has been hit especially hard by the rising cost of staffing due to increased local competition and a shortage of skilled workers.

Under the leadership of the Board and Chief Executive Officer Morris Funk, we have taken a “heads up” approach to facing financial challenges. Across the nation, we have seen countless organizations such as ours fail to respond until the economic burden was too great to overcome. Our decision to move forward with this agreement at this time will allow the greater mission of serving local seniors to live on.

Beth Sholom’s Legacy

This transition will allow for excellent care and service for residents on campus under Hill Valley Healthcare ownership. Hill Valley Healthcare will provide financial stability and staffing to the current resident-care operation. But rest assured the deep-rooted Beth Sholom mission to serve seniors will live on.

The Beth Sholom Board intends to use the proceeds from the sale to support programs in Richmond to continue to serve the senior community. While details are being worked through, we have begun discussions with the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond and other agencies and partners, to find expanded ways to support their programs. Make no mistake, while Beth Sholom’s brick and mortar operation is ending, our mission will live on serving the Greater Richmond Jewish Community.

We anticipate the transition over the coming weeks and months will be seamless for our residents and staff.

Thank you for your continued support and confidence as we transform.
