Risk it for the Brisket

On Nov. 6th, we didn’t risk a thing as the weather cooperated beautifully when Or Ami hosted our first “Risk it for the Brisket.”

Four contenders (Nancy Nelson, Darren Moorehead, Joel Moses and Elliot Barnett) competed in a “brisket cook-off” to raise funds. The event was well-attended, with over 50 guests, and everyone had a terrific time sampling the four distinct – but all delicious – briskets.

Ultimately, we crowned Elliot Barnett the winner based on votes from the crowd. The event made for a great afternoon and raised $875 for Or Ami!

Have you heard the term “nonbinary” but aren’t quite sure what it means? Are you curious about Jewish teachings on gender identity going back thousands of years? Join us over Zoom on Sunday, Dec. 4, 4 to 5  p.m., to find out!

Rabbi Dr. Nikki DeBlosi (a Harvard graduate with a gift for explaining challenging concepts in a way that everyone can understand) and Bonz Swencionis (a Jewish, nonbinary actor known for roles in shows like 30 Rock, White Collar, and Return) share academic, spiritual, and personal insights about what it means to include nonbinary people in the Jewish community.

This is our opening program for a series on gender diversity in the Jewish community, made possible due to a generous grant from the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond. We encourage everyone from the Jewish community to come and learn.

Please visit or-ami.com/guest-speakers and RSVP by Friday, Dec. 2, using the Google link on this page to receive the Zoom link.

On Sunday, Dec. 12, the Religious Schools at Or Ami and Or Atid will have a large and fun combined Chanukah party between 10 a.m. and noon. This is the second of our joint programs this school year, following a very fun Sukkot community/harvest-themed event in October, which was held at Or Atid.
