“Matzoh Ball Gumbo” by Marcie Cohen Ferris

“Jew-ish” by Jake Cohen

On Sunday, June 26, from 4 to 7 p.m., the Hadassah Book Group will get together to discuss these two cookbooks while we enjoy a potluck meal we prepare with recipes from the books.

Jew-ish: A Cookbook: Reinvented Recipes from a Modern Mensch by Jake Cohen is a modern take on Jewish culinary traditions from a bright new star in the culinary world. As a food writer and nice Jewish boy Jake Cohen reinvents the food of his Ashkenazi heritage and draws inspiration from his husband’s Persian-Iraqi traditions to offer recipes that are modern, fresh, and enticing for a whole new generation of readers.

From the colonial era to the present, in Matzoh Ball Gumbo by Marcie Cohen Ferris examines the expressive power of food throughout southern Jewish history. She demonstrates with delight and detail how southern Jews reinvented culinary traditions. Richly illustrated, this culinary tour of the historic Jewish South is an evocative mixture of history and foodways, including more than thirty recipes to try at home.

Choose one or two recipes and bring enough to share!  You do not need to get both books.

The dinner will be at the home of Deborah Cohen.  She has both indoor and outdoor seating.  Kindly RSVP to Deborah at deborah.cohen2468@gmail.com to let her know what you will be bringing.  She will help keep the menu on track.  Please note that this meal will be “kosher style,” but not kosher.  Please, no pork or shellfish.

Even if you can’t cook, email Deborah, and we will figure out another way for you to contribute and enjoy the potluck. This will be so much fun!  (And delicious!).
