Or Ami will have our Community Seder on Sunday, March 28 at 5:30 pm – all are welcome, and if not a member of Or Ami, please contact Maria (our office manager) for the Zoom link (Office@or-ami.com) to this event.
Or Ami has a long tradition of inclusion in our holiday celebrations, and no virus will stop us!
And Beth Jones, one of our lovely Or-Amians, was not going to let the virus stop anyone else. Her concern for our elderly members motivated her to organize a list of congregants over seventy-five to contact. She wanted to make sure they knew how to register for a vaccine and had the computer skills and equipment to accomplish this. Evidently, we are a savvy bunch of elders as no one needed their help, but everyone appreciated Beth and her fellow telephoners immensely. Sometimes kindnesses can go an unexpectedly long way.
Due to Richmond Jewish Foundation’s generosity and the Or Ami community, we now have brand new live streaming equipment. Our Seder, along with weekly Shabbat services, will be available on Facebook and YouTube simultaneously.
Speaking of live streaming, Or Ami celebrated our first Zoom Bat Mitzvah! Denver Patton’s Bat Mitzvah was on Jan. 23.
Denver had this to say:
A Bat Mitzvah on Zoom. You’re probably thinking that it would be horrible. At first I thought so too, but for me it was actually easier. I get scared speaking in front of people, so not being able to see them face to face made it so much easier. Of course there were a few problems like people going off mute, but my brother took care of muting everyone. One particular tricky part was that I had to lead the whole service. The Rabbi led some prayers, but I did mostly everything. I had a lot of practice through quarantine and I learned fast, but I was still scared about leading the entire service. I thank my family, my Hebrew tutor, and Rabbi for their help and encouragement throughout this experience.
We are so proud of Denver. She did a great job.
Our virtual Book Club planned to meet March 1 featuring Yossi Klein Halevi’s Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor, and April 5’s selection is from Ruth Gilligan, Nine Folds Make a Paper Swan.
